The Government has today flagged off water trucking and relief food assistance in Garissa County as part of drought response scale-up, aimed at protecting lives and livelihoods as drought conditions continue to worsen across Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs).
The country is currently experiencing a deteriorating drought situation following the poor performance of the October-December 2025 short rains season, which was marked by late onset, poor distribution, and early cessation. Most ASAL counties received less than 75% of normal rainfall, undermining seasonal recovery and accelerating depletion of water and pasture resources. As a result, the number of food-insecure people across 23 ASAL counties is estimated at more than 2.14 million, with further deterioration expected through the January-March 2026 dry season if timely interventions are not sustained.
