Impact of 2023 Short Rains Season on Food and Nutrition Security in ASAL Counties

The food security situation in the 23 arid and semi-arid (ASAL) counties has improved based on findings of an assessment of the impact of the October to December short rains season. Consequently, the population facing acute food insecurity has dropped to 2 million from 2.8 million reported in July 2023.

The Acute Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) places 300,000 of the affected population in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) and 1.7 million in Crisis (IPC Phase 3). Households classified in IPC Phase 3 or above are considered to be in urgent need of humanitarian assistance to protect livelihoods and reduce food consumption gaps.
