23 ASAL counties continued to fall under the Normal drought phase based on the range of environmental, production, access and utilization indicators monitored that fell within their usual ranges as a result of the good performance of MAM 2024 rainfall season. The risks associated with wet conditions are equally subsiding across the ASAL counties. The situation is expected to continue in the normal phase following the cessation of MAM long rains.
However, the situation is projected to deteriorate during JJA season, in some Arid counties of ASALs except for the western parts of the ASAL counties including; Samburu, Turkana, West Pokot and Baringo which usually receive JJA rains.
The planned Long Rains Assessment(LRA) 2024 in July is expected to provide updated numbers of food-insecure population in the ASAL counties.
