Sunny and dry weather conditions persisted in most ASAL counties throughout January 2025, with localised rainfall in parts of Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Narok, Nyeri, Laikipia, Makueni, and the Baringo highlands.
Following the poor performance of the 2024 Short Rains, the situation has worsened in most of the counties, with 20 counties currently classified in the “Normal” drought phase but on a worsening trend.
Three counties, namely, Wajir, Kilifi, and Kwale remain in “Alert” phase. Among the most affected areas in the aforementioned counties include: Tarbaj, Wajir West, Eldas, Wajir South, Ganze, Kinango and Lungalunga.
