Dry weather conditions persisted across most ASAL counties throughout February 2025, following the poor performance of the 2024 Short Rains. As a result, the situation has deteriorated in many counties, with 14 currently classified under the “Normal” drought phase, though the majority are on a worsening trend. The 15 counties in Normal drought phase are Baringo, Garissa, Tana River, Kitui, Laikipia, Tharaka, Makueni, Meru, Garissa, Nyeri, Narok, Embu, Taita Taveta, Kajiado and West Pokot.

Eight counties including Mandera, Kwale, Isiolo, Samburu, Turkana, Marsabit, Wajir, and Kilifi remain in the “Alert” drought phase. Rainfall onset for ASAL counties is expected  during the second and third week of April 2025 according to the statement from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
