The Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) as at February 26, 2018 shows an extremely fast depletion of vegetation greenness across most ASAL counties.  The situation is already critical in Garissa, Isiolo and Tana River counties and Wajir South Sub-County. In these cases, deficits are close to the historical minimum. Counties with severe/extreme vegetation deficits are Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Kajiado and Samburu (Samburu East).
Semi-arid counties with hotspots in severe/extreme deficit category are Lamu (Lamu East); Meru (Igembe South); Embu (Mbere North); Tharaka Nithi (Tharaka), Taita Taveta (Taveta Sub-County) while regions with moderate deficit but fast degradation of greenness include Turkana, Kilifi (Magarini, Ganze and Malindi), West Pokot, Baringo and Makueni.
